Neeraj Chopra Creates History, Breaches 90m Mark In Doha Diamond League

India’s Neeraj Chopra on Friday scripted history as he finally breached the 90m mark with a stunning 90.23m throw in the Doha Diamond League men’s javelin throw event. Chopra’s previous best was 89.94m at the Stockholm Diamond League 2022.

Two-time Olympic medallist Chopra began his sequence at the Qatar Sports Club with a world-leading 88.44m throw. He fouled his second attempt but hauled the spear 90.23m with his third haul to script history.

With this, Neeraj became the first Indian athlete to breach the 90m mark in javelin throw event. He became the third Asian and 25th overall to achieve the feat.

Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem (92.97m) of Pakistan and Chao-Tsun Cheng (91.36m) of Chinese Taipei are the two other Asians to have breached the 90m mark.

However, Neeraj finished second behind Germany’s Julian Weber, who clinched the top spot with an impressive throw of 91.06 metres in a dramatic men’s javelin contest at the Doha Diamond League. Weber’s 91.06m is his personal best and the world-leading distance for this season.

Meanwhile, Anderson Peters of Grenada was a distant third with a best throw of 85.64m with Keshom Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago ending fourth with 84.65m.

Eventually, it was a good result for Chopra as it took off the pressure of crossing the 90m mark off his back, and the Indian star can now concentrate on defending his World Championship gold and on regaining the Olympic gold medal in Los Angeles in 2028.

On the other hand, India’s Asian Games silver medallist Kishore Kumar Jena had a forgettable evening as he could not get into the 80m range on Friday. He finished eighth among 11 participants with a best throw of 78.60m.
