Netflix Adds New Option to Share Clips from Shows to Social Media

Netflix has added a new option that will make it easier to share clips from Netflix shows across your social networks.

The new option, called “Moments”, is essentially a clipping feature built into the Netflix player, which will enable you to create short clips to re-distribute to your friends.

As you can see in this example, the Netflix pause screen will soon have a new “Moments” option, which, when tapped, will let you to create a clip of the scene that you’re watching.

That clip will then be saved to your “My Netflix” tab, while you’ll also be able to share it to your social platform of choice.

The clip will include a link back to the full movie or show on Netflix, effectively promoting Netflix content on the platform’s behalf, while also enabling you to highlight specific segments to friends.

Which is a logical update from the app, considering the social media discussion that its shows already generate. But it also marks a significant advance in Netflix’s online promotional strategy, given that, in the past, it has actively sought to block people from screenshotting and sharing content from its programs.

It seems that it’s now embracing the promotional potential of social media discussion, and has worked out the respective rights concerns for such. Which given that people had already found workarounds for such either way, makes sense.

It’s a good way to lean into this type of sharing, and streamline the discussion of key moments to help build hype around Netflix shows. Netflix has also embraced the power of word of mouth on social apps, deploying an army of reviewers to hype its latest shows across different apps, and combined with these clips, that could be a powerful way to maximize attention for its latest releases.

So it’s not a social media platform update, as such, but a relevant one for social media users, and understanding key engagement trends in the app.

Netflix’s “Moments” option is being rolled out to users on iOS from today, with Android coming soon.
