New Renault Twingo Confirmed For The UK

Well, here’s some delightful news. After a bit of will-they-won’t-they speculation, it’s been confirmed that the new Renault Twingo will be coming to the UK.

That’s directly from the company’s CEO Fabrice Cambolive, who said: “I’m pleased to confirm Renault Twingo will launch in the UK.

“I put all my attention on the challenge to launch Twingo in right-hand drive, because I believe a car under 20,000 euro equivalent [approx. £17,000] has huge potential in the UK as well as Europe, both for opening up the segment because of its design, technology and dynamics as with R5 and R4, but also because it brings a new level of versatility for the class that I believe customers will respond to.

“Accessibility to EVs is critical for the future, and Twingo offers something new for Renault, and for all car buyers.”

We’re rather keen on the upcoming EV, or at least the concepts and prototypes we’ve seen so far. A cute, electric reworking of the original Twingo from the 1990s, it’s set to form a trio of retro-styled EV hatches from Renault, together with the new 5 and 4.

Given we missed out on the first generation the new electric car pays tribute to, making its way here for the less-cutesy second- and third-gens, it’s a pretty significant moment for the UK market. Presumably, the reception of the 5 has had an influence.

That’s about all we can say for it now. If that ‘under 20,000 euro equivalent’ happens, it’ll become one of the cheapest electric cars on the market, competing with the Citroen e-C3. With Nissan also working on a car that will use the Twingo as its base, it remains to be seen if that too will come to our shores.
