Newcastle ‘hatch plan’ to keep Anthony Gordon amid Liverpool interest

Newcastle United reportedly draw up a plan to keep England international Anthony Gordon amid interest from Liverpool.

Newcastle United are reportedly expected to consider offering Anthony Gordon a new contract amid interest from Liverpool.
The Magpies experienced an eventful end to June as they looked to raise funds to help them meet the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules.

Newcastle agreed deals to sell Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to Nottingham Forest and Brighton & Hove Albion respectively.

The Magpies also saw some of their star names linked with moves away from St James’ Park, including Alexander Isak and Gordon.

Isak emerged as a potential transfer target for Chelsea, while Liverpool were linked with a move for England forward Gordon.

Newcastle to consider new Gordon contract

The former Everton man was believed to be keen to join the Reds, but the move ultimately failed to come to fruition.

Newcastle were seemingly open to Gordon’s departure as long as Jarrell Quansah moved in the opposite direction, which is something that Liverpool were reluctant to agree to.

The Profit and Sustainability rules deadline of June 30 has now passed, but there is still the possibility that Liverpool could pursue a deal for the Newcastle winger.

While Gordon may have had his head turned, The Evening Chronicle are reporting that Newcastle are considering whether to offer him a new contract.

The report also claims that several of Newcastle’s key players have been left unsettled by the club’s willingness to sanction sales due to their concerns over the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules.

How important is Gordon to Newcastle?
There is a belief that newly-appointed sporting director Paul Mitchell will look to establish the level of Liverpool’s interest in Gordon.

Mitchell will also try to find out Gordon’s stance on his Newcastle future, before he decides whether to pursue potential discussions over a new contract.

Newcastle are under no immediate pressure to sell the England international, but they will be wary of the fact that he has entered the final two years of his deal.

Magpies boss Eddie Howe will be reluctant to lose Gordon, with the winger regarded as a key player in the Newcastle squad.

The 23-year-old made 48 competitive appearances during the 2023-24 season, scoring 12 goals and providing 11 assists.

After missing out on European football last term, Gordon will be the type of player that Newcastle will want to keep if they are to trouble the European places in the 2024-25 campaign.
