Bryce Young is heading to the bench.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Network first reported that the Carolina Panthers were benching Young and would start veteran Andy Dalton in the team’s Week 3 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Panthers head coach Dave Canales said that Young is still “our quarterback,” but the decision shows he needed to make a change before the 2024 season gets further out of hand. This was in line with statements he made following the Week 2 loss, although he did not show any desire to bench Young during that press conference.

The Panthers are 0-2 and the have only produced a single touchdown in 2024. That came on a run from Young, but he has otherwise shown significant struggles in his second season.

Fans took to social media to express shock at the decision.

Mike Chappell @mchappell51Might be a mercy benching. Young looks completely overwhelmed. https://t.co/jHJ0bC0wca

JJ Watt @JJWattWOW. https://t.co/MtTLqLKd5j

Others took to social media to rip into the Panthers and owner David Tepper and declare that Young’s time with the franchise may be near its end.

Franklin @franklinisboredWow! That’s basically the end of the Bryce Young era in Carolina.

Chetti @CallMeChettiPanthers failed Bryce, it’s going to be Josh Rosen 2.0 but even worse. Panthers need to clean house, from ownerships all the way down.

Maybe give Dave Canales a real chance but at this point the franchise needs a cleanse.

Larry Rudolph QBC Media @qbcountry_mediaTaking Bryce Young over CJ Stroud has to be the worst decision ever made by an owner.

Tucker @SportingLogicalTwo things can be true

1 – Bryce Young was a talented prospect that (although with obvious flaws) could’ve been a starting NFL QB

2 – The Panthers are the single worst QB situation to go to since maybe ever

j u @worldbossjuWelp. They just killed Bryce Young career

z @mookeBryce Young set the Panthers back a decade https://t.co/NjnYaDzSH4

Bills🦬🏈CelticsπŸ€πŸ€ @MscTchSprtMafiaOof. Bryce Young’s going the way of Zach Wilson.

Geoff Long @GeoffLong33If you put any QB in that Carolina offensive. Most of them would fail. Bryce Young is in a no win situation.

nyJokes @L1JetsSay what you want about Bryce Young, but the panthers have absolutely failed in him every way. Truly sad #panthers

Young was the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NFL draft but has not had an easy go of it in the NFL.

He went 2-14 in his rookie season, throwing for 2,877 yards with 11 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. This came as 2023 No. 2 pick C.J. Stroud won the Offensive Rookie of the Year Award and led the Houston Texans to an AFC South Division title.

What makes the situation worse is the massive haul Carolina gave up to select Young at No. 1, which includes a 2024 draft pick that turned into No. 1 pick Caleb Williams.

Adam Schefter @AdamSchefterCarolina’s 2025 second-round pick still is going to Chicago as the final piece of the Bryce Young trade, which went like this:

Bears received:
🏈 WR DJ Moore
🏈 2023 first-round pick (OT Darnell Wright)
🏈 2023 second-round pick (CB Tyrique Stevenson)
🏈 2024 first-round pick…

Carolina will now hope some time off can help Young revitalize his career and allow the team to see some return from the player it hoped could carry the franchise.
