NFL revises uniform policy, allows third helmet design
NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero reports the NFL has informed its clubs that they have revised their uniform policy to allow a third helmet in their closet.
In 2022, the NFL allowed for a second shell color, allowing the Atlanta Falcons to bring back their throwback red helmets, proven to be a fan favorite.
Pelissero followed up his initial report with a memo from the NFL outlining the parameters accompanying this revision, including the expansion of this rule from only teams re-designing in 2024 to all teams in 2025.
According to the memo, the second and third helmets need to follow the following requirements:
Worn with an authorized optional uniform (Classic, Alternate, and/or Color Rush). If paired with a classic uniform, the colors and designs must be historically compatible.Must obtain an entire new set of alternate-color helmets for all players.Must be the same make, model and size as the primary helmetMust be made available to all players at the start of training camp.Must be worn in practice at a minimum during the week leading up to the game they will be used.
