Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys are reportedly getting closer to an agreement in extension negotiations.

According to Clarence Hill of DLLS, “progress has been made” in contract talks between both sides and a potential new extension is “closer than it has been.” Hill also noted that the length of the deal is “not a sticking point” in discussions.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport previously reported on Wednesday that Prescott and the Cowboys were “not close” on a new contract.

The 31-year-old will carry a $55.1 million cap hit for the 2024 season before hitting free agency in 2025, per Spotrac. He’d likely be the top quarterback available on the open market and could command a hefty contract from an opposing team that’s looking for consistency under center.

Still, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones didn’t appear to be in a rush to sign Prescott before the regular season begins.

“We don’t need to get this done before the season,” Jones said, via Hill. “We just don’t need to get it done before the season. Because it’s in all of our interest, Dak and everybody, to have a great season. And as a matter of fact, that’s probably not realistic to think before the season.”

Prescott is coming off an impressive 2023 campaign, leading the Cowboys to a 12-5 record while his 36 touchdown passes were the most among all signal-callers. He also completed 69.5 percent of his throws for 4,516 yards, adding 242 yards and two more scores on the ground.

Dallas agreed to a long-term extension with another star on Aug. 26, signing wide receiver CeeDee Lamb to a new four-year deal worth $136 million.

The Cowboys and Prescott will look to continue making progress in contract negotiations ahead of the team’s Week 1 clash with the Cleveland Browns on Sunday at 4:25 p.m. ET.
