Russell Wilson wants the ball.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback told the team he can play in its Week 1 game against the Atlanta Falcons. However, he added that team doctors are taking a cautious approach.
Adam Schefter @AdamSchefterSteelers QB Russell Wilson, listed as questionable for Sunday due to a calf injury, has told the team that he can play vs. the Falcons, but the team doctors are being more cautious, per sources. The team plans to make a final decision about his status Sunday. If Wilson can’t…
ESPN’s Brooke Pryor reported that Wilson will test his injured calf during pregame warm-ups and will “do everything possible to be ready.”
Brooke Pryor @bepryorRussell Wilson told me Friday he would probably test the calf Sunday during pregame warm ups, and he was going to do everything possible to be ready, including getting lots of treatment on his calf leading up to the game. https://t.co/QCvkomLi23
If Wilson is unable to play, backup Justin Fields will get the start.
If Fields starts and plays well, he could win the job. The 25-year-old saw significant first-team reps during training camp while Wilson was originally dealing with this injury and also brings 40 games of starting experience and former first-round pedigree to the table.
Wilson has had a prolific career but is coming off of a disappointing tenure with the Denver Broncos. He is playing on a one-year, prove-it deal with the Steelers and will aim to make a case for being a starter beyond 2024.
The best way to do that is to excel on the field and the 35-year-old will need to figure out the best way to do that despite the calf ailment.
