NI ‘built to adjust’ as bug hits camp

Despite the illness, Oxtoby is hopeful her squad will not be overly impacted and said “we’re in a good place”.

After qualifying for Euro 2022, Northern Ireland are aiming to reach back-to-back European Championships.

“We’re built to adjust and the theme of the camp has been to pivot,” added Australian Oxtoby.

Striker Kerry Beattie has been forced out of the squad through injury and replaced by Glentoran team-mate Emily Wilson, while Athlone Town forward Casey Howe was absent from Thursday’s open training session at Windsor Park.

“There are a few changes in and out, in terms of training and things like that, but we’re finally coming good I think, so fingers crossed,” said Oxtoby.

“Malta will be a really tough test for us, they are really dangerous in possession and they have some really dangerous players in terms of their movements,” added Oxtoby.

“We are well aware of that and we need to be switched on for the full 90 minutes.

“It’s the first game of a campaign, you are at home so you want to put in a really good performance.

“I’d be really pleased to get the result given the challenges that we’ve had this week. It will give us a good platform to move forward with.”

‘It will be a tough game’Striker Simone Magill, who netted in February’s play-off victory over Montenegro, says Malta will be tough opposition at Windsor Park.

“It’s a new campaign and every team is itching to get going and get off to a good start,” said the Aston Villa forward.

“I’ve no doubt Malta will come out and give us a really tough game tomorrow night.

“The start of a campaign is crucial. It can really set you up. We won’t get carried away or look too far ahead.

“If we can get off to a good start then we are sitting in a good position for the rest of the campaign.”
