Nick Cannon Opens Up About Why His Marriage To Mariah Carey Didn’t Work
On Thursday, October 24, an almost five-minute clip was shared via Ray Daniel’s YouTube channel. In the clip, Daniels appeared to be interviewing Cannon, who spoke about his former marriage to Carey and its demise.
Cannon seemingly explained that he felt “pressure” and questioned himself by asking, “Who am I?” during their union. The host explained that he got married while in his 20s to the “biggest star in the world.”
“And my trajectory was here and then hers — she’s already in a different stratosphere,” Cannon explained. “So, I would lay up at night thinking, ‘Is this who I am? Am I [just] Mariah’s man? Is that what my life is supposed to be?’”
Furthermore, Cannon explained that there would be “nothing wrong” with that. Additionally, he said he got “really comfortable” with the luxurious treatment he received for being Carey’s husband, and they never had “issues.” However, after they had children, he felt his manhood couldn’t thrive in the dynamic of their relationship.
“I’m carrying the purse, the diaper bag — she’s rocking — being all the alpha she is,” Cannon recalled. “And I believe she needs a dude like that; I’m just not that dude!”

Social Media Weighs In
Social media users reacted to Cannon’s candid statements in The Shade Room’s comment section.
Instagram user @that.sweet.peach wrote, “Ego and lack of maturity, will have you losing everything good. Smh”
While Instagram user @stefanietla added, “His limited ego couldn’t comprehend what actual provision was. She didn’t need him financially or socially, but she needed him emotionally, spiritually, and mentally. She needed the provision of support and protection, which he, like too many boys in adult flesh, chose to ignore. An unfortunate tale as old as time.”
Instagram user @pri.la.soul wrote, “Meanwhile Mariah is somewhere thawing out for Christmas not worried about Nick.”
While Instagram user @zezemillz added, “I actually feel sorry for all his mother’s children who have to hear this. So he basically picked you because they didn’t have TOO much going on. They were low hanging fruit in his eyes. Imagine hearing this 🥹”
Instagram user @kaylynnrial wrote, “So pretty much he was insecure due to her being a successful woman.”
While Instagram user @alexy.lex added, “So basically he couldn’t be with Mariah because of his Ego, typical”
Instagram user @eliteafricanqueen wrote, “That’s sad. That shows Nick was insecure. You can be with an already made woman and still stand strong in your masculinity.”
While Instagram user @msjazzee added, “Sadly, this is a common thing for successful women. Mind you he never said she made him feel this way. This was all his internal struggles. My thing is, I’m sure he felt this way from the beginning, so why take it as far as getting married and having kids?!”
Nick Cannon Previously Shared An Update On Mariah Carey Following A Recent Tragedy
Carey has yet to publicly react to her ex-husband’s candid reflection on their marriage and its end. In fact, on Monday, October 28, she took to Instagram to share a skit alongside Kerry Washington, letting the public know that her current focus is on the upcoming election.
Meanwhile, Cannon’s statements on Carey aren’t his first in recent weeks. As The Shade Room previously reported, in September, Cannon revealed that his ex-wife has been “doing the best that she possibly can” since the passing of her mother, Patricia Carey, and sister, Alison Carey, in August.
At the time, Carey shared a statement, seemingly explained that her mom and sister had passed away in separate circumstances on the same day.
