“Nigeria, a tough team” – Brazil’s Lorena, Nunes savour hard-fought win over Super Falcons at Paris Olympics

Brazil goalkeeper Lorena da Silva Leite has confessed that their slim victory over Nigeria in their opening match of the Paris 2024 Olympics did not come easy, Soccernet.ng reports.

Gabi Nunes scored the only goal of the encounter in the 37th minute as the Canarinhas claimed their third win in as many games over the Super Falcons.

Randy Waldrum’s Falcons, looking for their first win at the Olympics since 2004, had their chances in a keenly contested affair in Bordeaux.

Goalkeeper Lorena made a point-blank save from Chinwendu Ihezuo and kept out a wicked Christy Ucheibe drive before Arthur Elias-tutored Brazil grabbed their opener.

The Gremio shot-stopper then denied captain Rasheedat Ajibade in the second half as Nigeria searched in vain for an equaliser.

After the encounter, the 27-year-old goalie revealed that Brazil’s preparation and unity gave them the edge over the nine-time African champions.

“Brazil is well-prepared,” Lorena said, as per Football Sierra Leone.

“Arthur is doing an excellent job, and we saw today how strong our group is. Nigeria is a tough team, but we deserved to win. Our team is united and always ready to compete for the first place.”

Goalscorer Gabi Nunes also echoed the sentiments of teammate Lorena in admitting that Nigeria were no cheap customers.

The last time Nigeria met Brazil at the Olympics, the Super Falcons wobbled to a 3-1 defeat.

Nunes maintained that Brazil had to work hard for their win on Thursday evening.

“I’m really happy with this game,” Nunes said.

“It was tough, but our team is amazing. We worked hard to play well, and I’m pleased to have scored and helped the team. Now, it’s time to rest and enjoy this moment.”

It does not get easier for the Super Falcons as Waldrum and his ladies will next trade tackles with Spain, who floored Asian giants Japan also on Thursday.
