Oh boy, ‘Joker 2’ might be a ‘jukebox musical’

A musical? OK then.

Sometimes a sentence comes along that makes you do a double take. For me, this sentence, in a tweet from Variety, most definitely qualifies.

Variety wrote on X: “EXCLUSIVE: Insiders privy to filming and early versions of Todd Phillips’ ‘Joker: Folie Ă  Deux’ tell Variety the movie leans heavily towards being ‘mostly a jukebox musical,’ as it integrates at last 15 reinterpretations of ‘very well-known’ songs.”

The next Joker movie — a film that took itself very seriously even if it didn’t say much — is…going…to be a jukebox musical? The character that ended up being super popular with the far right is going to be singing and dancing around. The movie is set to star Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga. Having Gaga sing is never a bad idea, but um, still this whole idea leaves you wondering WTF.

A ton of people online agreed with my sentiment. Folks also wondered what songs would be involved. There is lots to figure out because it’s a truly strange idea to turn the Joker into Mamma Mia.

So, yes, Joker 2 — which will apparently be titled Joker: Folie Ă  Deux — will reportedly be a musical. Interesting. Strange. It’s scheduled to be released in October, so we’ve got plenty of time to get jokes off until it comes out.
