Two months before his death, the former NFL star was seen out and about in Las Vegas — without his cane.

That month, a news outlet reported that Simpson had been diagnosed with prostate cancer. However, the former athlete denied that he was in hospice care.

“Hospice! You talking about hospice?” he said with a laugh in a video message shared to X at the time.

“No, I’m not even in the hospital. I don’t know who put that out there.”

Simpson then told viewers that he was prepping to host “a ton of friends” for a Super Bowl LVIII viewing party that weekend.

In May 2023, Simpson revealed his cancer diagnosis to the public, writing that he began using medical marijuana to ease his side effects.

“I had to do the whole chemo thing … I started smoking a couple of puffs a day, and I only had nausea twice,” he said in a video message on X. “I’m over the chemo. I only got nauseous on two occasions. … The pot really helped me with the unfortunate side of catching cancer.”

Simpson’s death ignited mixed emotions on social media.
