Olympic Champion Alex Yee also wins WTCS Weihai
That Alex Yee is the big man for the Olympic Distance was of course already proven during the Paris Olympics – where he won – but today he proved it once again: he just won the WTCS Weihai in China by a landslide.
Especially the course in Weihai provided a rather spectacular challenge, because eight rounds of five kilometers were completed on the bike and each round contained a steep climb of no less than 80 altimeters. In total, no less than 700 altimeters were overcome, which made the bike not only interesting, but also killing. That a nice leading group emerged, which in addition to Alex Yee included Léo Bergere, Miguel Hidalgo, Alberto Gonzalez Garcia, Vincent Luis, Luke Willian, Dylan McCullough, Jack Willis, Max Stapley and Simon Westermann, made the race all the more exciting. It was notable that Hayden Wilde – the runner-up from Paris and surely Yee’s eternal rival – could not keep up on the bike and had to let the leading group go.
During the run, nobody could keep up with Yee either. As often happens, the Brit decided the race during the run and he did so with great power. When Yee crossed the finish line – in 1:48:21 – it was quite a while before Bergere took second in 1:49:07. Hidalgo finished third in 1:49:18; the best result ever for the Brazilian athlete.
