Much to the delight of the Paris crowd, France captured its second consecutive Olympic gold medal in men’s indoor volleyball with a straight-set win over Poland.
The French won 25-19, 25-20 and 25-23 to become the first team to sweep the gold-medal match since 2016 when Italy defeated Brazil.
France is the third country to win gold in back-to-back Olympics, joining the Soviet Union (1964, 1968) and United States (1984, 1988).

This also marks the third time the host country has won the men’s indoor volleyball tournament. It previously happened to the United States (1984) and Brazil (2016).
Poland had opportunities to at least keep the match close. It took an 18-16 lead in the second set before the French won nine of the next 11 points to go up 2-0 in the match.
A similar situation occurred in the third set when Poland went up 17-15 and later 18-17. France responded by winning six straight points to all but seal the win. Poland did save four match points, but Wilfredo LeΓ³n’s serve on the fifth match point landed out of bounds to give France the victory.
After making it through a five-set thriller against Germany in the quarterfinals, France hit another level for its final two matches. Head coach Andrea Giani’s team didn’t drop a set in the semifinals or final, with only one set decided by fewer than four points.
Poland earned its second medal in men’s volleyball in Olympic history. Its the first time the country reached the final since winning gold in 1976. The Polish team had finished fifth and lost in the quarterfinals in each of the past five Olympics dating back to 2004.
