Japan is back atop the medal podium in men’s gymnastics, and by the narrowest of margins.
The country just edged past China to win gold in a battle between the two favorites heading into the event, winning by a minuscule 0.532, while the United States got on the podium as well with a bronze medal in dramatic fashion.

In the end, it was Stephen Nedoroscik’s epic performance on the pommel horse that helped the United States clinch the bronze:

Megan 📚 @MegWritesBooksObsessed with this guy on the US men’s gymnastics team who’s only job is pommel horse, so he just sits there until he’s activated like a sleeper agent, whips off his glasses like Clark Kent and does a pommel horse routine that helps deliver the team its first medal in 16 years. pic.twitter.com/0D1ZqJjFa1
sean yoo @SeanYootaking off your glasses to then perform a near perfect routine on the pommel horse is so freaking metal
Great Britain took third overall in qualification, while the United States finished fifth.
But the American men turned it up a gear in the final.
