Despite a scorching start, which included winning the first set in 34 minutes, Alexander Zverev struggled late against Tomas Machac.
In the end, the top-seeded German won eight straight points to win the second set, 7-5, and reach the third round.
The 2021 Tokyo Olympics men’s singles champion has always been dominant on clay, including this year, where he reached the French Open final.
Barring what would be a significant upset, Zverev should reach at least the semifinal round, where a matchup with Novak Djokovic likely awaits.

Both Taylor Fritz and Lorenzo Musetti won and will face each other in the third round of the Paris Olympics, a rematch of their 2024 Wimbledon quarterfinal match.
Musetti, who won that battle in five sets, will likely open as the favorite, given his more successful track record on clay, but Fritz should not be counted out.
The top-seeded American has been dominant on serve, with 28 aces in two matches, while winning at least 78% of points on first serve across both Olympic matches.
If Fritz can serve consistently, he should be able to win this match.
