While the New England Patriots moved on from their head coach this offseason, they also overhauled their quarterback room, moving on from Mac Jones and replacing him with the trio of veteran free agent Jacoby Brissett, first-round pick Drake Maye and sixth-round pick Joe Milton III.

Since all three were brought in (joining Bailey Zappe), Brissett has been the presumed starter, taking all of the top reps, and Maye has followed behind him. Zappe and Milton have flip-flopped in training camp and the preseason games.

With just a few practice sessions and one preseason matchup left until the regular season, many have wondered when new head coach Jerod Mayo will announce who the team’s starter will be for the regular season.

On Wednesday, Mayo gave a peek into the timeline, saying that the team wants to decide on their starting quarterback by Monday or Tuesday of next week, but he may not announce it right away.

Neither Brissett nor Maye have really stood out over the last month, and with Brissett being the veteran with experience in the system, he’s still labeled as the starter at this time.

However, Mayo did say that he is 100% confident that Maye could handle being a starter right now if he was asked to do so.

If the third overall pick builds on the very small wins he had during the team’s preseason loss against the Philadelphia Eagles, he could leapfrog Brissett at the top guy. But, New England has predicted the rookie so far, so it’s far from a guarantee.
