New England Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett suffered a right shoulder injury during Sunday’s 20-10 preseason loss to the Washington Commanders.

While the team announced during the game that the signal-caller was questionable to return, head coach Jerod Mayo said after the game, per Ben Volin of the Boston Globe, that Brissett “would’ve been able to continue.”

Brissett took a hard sack during the Patriots’ first drive of the game and came to the sideline grimacing and holding his right shoulder. He did not return to the field during the next drive.

Per ESPN’s Mike Reiss, New England had planned to play Brissett one to two drives in its preseason finale.

In his limited action on Sunday, Brissett threw for 19 yards on 2-of-4 passing. Should he be done for the night, Brissett will have finished the preseason with 36 passing yards on 5-of-14 passing.

Brissett joined the Patriots this offseason after backing up Sam Howell in Washington last season, throwing for 224 yards and three touchdowns on 18-of-23 passing with the Commanders.

In his last full season as a starter for the Cleveland Browns in 2022, Brissett had 2,608 passing yards, 12 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Whether Brissett will be the starter for the Patriots this season is still undecided. New England drafted Drake Maye with the third overall pick and he has had an impressive preseason, but head coach Jerod Mayo said the team will wait until after the preseason to officially name a starter.

“We still don’t know right now,” Mayo said this week, via NFL.com’s Grant Gordon. “We have another preseason game, and then a week after that. When I know, I’ll let you know.”

New England will now have a decision to make as it prepares to face the Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 8.
