Paul Gascoigne: England icon rushed to intensive care unit after collapsing at home

Paul Gascoigne was rushed to hospital on Friday night after collapsing at home.

The England icon was found semi-conscious in the bedroom of his home by a friend in Poole, Dorset, The Sun reports.

Gascoigne has battled a number of personal issues during and after his playing careerCredit: gettyGascoigne, who is best known in English club football for his spell at Tottenham Hotspur, was swiftly admitted to an intensive care unit before being moved to an acute medical unit.

His condition is now said to be stable and he’s understood to be out of immediate danger as of Saturday night.

However, it’s understood he will remain in hospital for some time.

The friend who discovered him, Steve Foster, has been quoted saying ‘Gazza’ would “like to thank everyone for the support he’s received so far from so many old friends who wish him well and want to see him back to his best.”

The Sun’s report adds that Gascoigne’s daughter, Bianca, his two sisters as well as ex-footballer friends Peter Beardsley, Chris Waddle, Paul Merson and Vinnie Jones were being kept updated on the situation.

The 58-year-old, who earned 57 caps for England, became a national icon during the 1990 World Cup with his tears after semi-final defeat to West Germany capturing the hearts of fans.

He enjoyed a stellar playing career, winning an FA Cup at Tottenham and two league titles with Rangers in what were the highlights of his club career.

Gascoigne also endeared himself to England fans at Euro 96 with a stunning solo goal during the Three Lions’ win over Scotland despite being written off as a top player by a number of fans and journalists pre-tournament.

However, the genius footballer battled a number of personal issues during his playing career and the struggles continued after he retired from the game in 2004.

Numerous fans have gone online to send their well-wishes to GazzaHis latest health scare comes after his company was shut down at the start of July when it failed to file records on time.

Companies House announced the firm, Gazza8 Limited, a company set up by Gascoigne in 2019 to channel income from TV appearances, documentaries and a planned film on his life, has been dissolved.

A number of fans have taken to social media to send their well-wishes to their hero.

One said: “Here’s hoping you make a speedy recovery Gazza.”

A Rangers fan said: “Hope Gazza is back to full health as quickly as possible, lucky to have met him a few times and always a character.

“That eight in a row season he was sensational and probably best of his career.”

And this Newcastle fan said: “Wishing Newcastle United legend Paul Gascoigne a speedy recovery after the 58-year-old was admitted to hospital earlier.

“We’re all with you, Gazza.”

Having enjoyed success with Newcastle, Spurs and Rangers, Gascoigne made a name for himself in Europe, completing a high-profile transfer to Italian giants Lazio in the summer of 1992.
