Paul Onuachu’s sucker punch: Nigerian star stuns Southampton in transfer drama

Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu has officially informed Southampton that he wants to leave the club this summer after tendering a transfer request, Soccernet.ng reports.

Onuachu joined Southampton from Belgian Jupiler League Pro side Genk last January, but he struggled with life in England. The 30-year-old striker did not get a lot play time at the club amid their relegation battle. And at the end of the campaign, he had to leave in order to get more minutes.

Onuachu then joined Turkish Super Lig side Trabzonspor last season, and he was quite impressive, registering 17 goals and four assists in 25 appearances. However, he returned to Southampton at the end of the season following the expiration of his loan deal.

Apparently, Trabzonspor were impressed with his performances, and the club have been making efforts to sign him permanently. But Southampton have been adamant because the Turkish club is unwilling to meet their €15 million valuation.

Onuachu has been with Southampton in pre-season, but he has not even made the matchday squad, a clear signal that coach Russell Martin does not want him.

There have been reports that the Super Eagles star wants to leave the Premier League club. But in a new development according to Sport Witness, Onuachu has tendered a transfer request at Southampton.

This move will put pressure on Southampton to sell the Super Eagles star this summer, and Trabzonspor could profit from it if they table the right offer.
