D’Amato, who also worked with Floyd Patterson and JosĆ© Torres, started working with a 12-year-old Tyson when he was while at Tryon School For Boys after being placed in the school following an incident in which he was handcuffed by police in upstate New York.

During his amateur career, Tyson won back-to-back gold medals at the Junior Olympic Games in 1981 and 1982. He also won the 1984 National Golden Gloves championship.

D’Amato died at the age of 77 in November 1985, one year before Tyson defeated Trevor Berbick to win the WBC title and become the youngest heavyweight champion in history at 20 years old.

A Bronx native, D’Amato was posthumously inducted into the New York State Boxing Hall of Fame in 2014.

Tyson has resumed his training program after an ulcer flare-up on a flight from Miami to Los Angeles in May forced the fight with Paul, which was originally scheduled for July 20, to be postponed.

Tyson hasn’t had a sanctioned bout since losing to Kevin McBride in June 2005. Paul has won 10 of his first 11 professional boxing matches, with seven victories by knockout or TKO.
