Texas Democratic congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a fierce advocate for African American rights, has died at the age of 74.
CNN reports that her family announced her death in a statement on July 19.

The respected politicianâs family remembers her as a âchampion of the people,â known fondly as âCongresswomanâ by her colleagues. Additionally, She served the public for more than 30 years. Jackson Lee revealed that she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in June. She said it would be a difficult journey, but her âfaithâ would sustain her.
Jackson Lee had an outstanding career. Specifically, she was one of the first women to graduate from Yale University. The activist eventually became a city councilman and Houston municipal judge. Furthermore, she was elected in 1994 to represent Texasâ 18th Congressional District. Jackson Lee was a radiating voice in government for Black Americans. She spoke against police brutality and pushed for legislation to be passed to secure Juneteenth as a national holiday. Moreover, she aligned with progressives who opposed the Iraq War and advocated for reparations for the descendants of enslaved Americans.
When she passed, she was the vice chairman of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. Additionally, the outlet notes that she was the chief deputy whip for the House Democrats.
