TEAM NEWS

It remains to be seen whether Rasmus Hojlund and Leny Yoro will be involved in San Diego, having both been forced off with injuries in our Tour 2024 opener against Arsenal.

As we await an update on the pair, there was positive news to come out of the United camp on Sunday, as defender Victor Lindelof returned to team training having missed the first three games of our pre-season campaign, and the Sweden captain will now hope to be involved versus Betis.

Antony, Christian Eriksen, Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay all played their first minutes of the summer over the weekend, as Ten Hag utilised 23 of the 29 players in his tour squad, at SoFi Stadium.

THE OPPOSITION

Real Betis are getting set for their fifth term under the tutelage of former Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini, who guided his side to a seventh-place finish in La Liga last time out. They will go into the UEFA Conference League play-offs as a result over the coming months, although are now without 2023/24 top scorer Willian Jose, who is now on the books of Spartak Moscow following a summer move.

Pellegrini’s squad still boasts experience and quality across the board however and includes several names that Premier League fans may be familiar with. Former West Ham pair Adrian and Pablo Fornals, plus ex-Arsenal right-back Hector Bellerin were among those that featured in their 1-0 loss to Liverpool on Saturday in Pittsburgh – their second summer outing after beating Austria Salzburg 5-1 earlier in July.

RECENT MEETINGS

United had not met Los Verdiblancos in any competition before early 2023, when the two clubs faced each other in the last 16 of the UEFA Europa League. Ten Hag’s Reds, if you remember, triumphed 5-1 on aggregate, defeating the Spanish side 4-1 in wintry conditions at Old Trafford before a long-range Marcus Rashford strike settled the second leg at their Estadio Benito Villamarin home a week later.

Earlier in that campaign, the two teams played a mid-season friendly at the same ground, which Betis won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Nabil Fekir, as the 2022 FIFA World Cup took place in Qatar.

The Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego is the location for our clash with Betis.

THE STADIUM

The Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, California, will be the host venue for the latest encounter between United and Betis this week. The arena, which first opened in August 2022 and holds a capacity of 35,000 spectators, is the regular home of several local sports teams, including the San Diego Wave women’s soccer team and the San Diego State Aztecs American football side. It will also be the base for San Diego FC, a forthcoming MLS expansion team, from 2025.

While the stadium is still in its infancy somewhat, it is not an unfamiliar location for United, with a youthful Reds side facing Wrexham at the ground 12 months ago, during our previous tour in the States.

Tickets for our remaining Tour 2024 matches, against Real Betis and Liverpool, are available to purchase here, subject to availability.
