Major League Soccer is mourning a rising star.

Holden Trent, a goalkeeper for the Philadelphia Union, has died. He was 25. The athlete passed away Oct. 26.

“We want to thank everyone for your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time,” his family said in a statement posted on the athlete’s Instagram page. “Holden passed away this afternoon surrounded by his family and friends.”

The soccer player is survived by his fiancé, Brie, to whom he proposed last December.

The cause of Trent’s death was not released. His family had previously shared on his Instagram Story that he had been hospitalized in an intensive care unit earlier in the week, CBS Sports reported.

“Details on services and celebration of life are forthcoming,” the post continued. “Our family is deeply touched to see and experience the love you all have for Holden. Love, Holden’s Family.”

Trent’s team also shared a tribute to the athlete.

“The Philadelphia Union is devastated by the heartbreaking passing of Holden Trent,” the soccer club said on their website. “While he was a wonderful player and fierce competitor, he was more importantly a devoted son, brother, fiancé, and teammate who made those around him better.”

The message continued, “He embodied the true meaning of determination, dedication and perseverance, and he will be deeply missed. We extend our greatest sympathies to his family, his fiancé, and his friends. Out of respect to Holden’s friends and family, there will be no further statements at this time and ask that their privacy is respected as they grieve.”

The Union had selected Trent, a native of Greensboro, North Carolina, as No. 28 overall in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft out of High Point University. He passed away before he could make his first-team debut, and had previously registered six appearances for their second team in MLS Next Pro, ESPN reported.

MLS reps also expressed their condolences over the player’s death.

“Major League Soccer joins the Philadelphia Union and our entire soccer community in mourning the tragic passing of Union goalkeeper Holden Trent,” read a post shared on the league’s Instagram page. “A young goalkeeper with a bright future, Trent showcased determination and professionalism every day as he contributed to the close-knit goalkeeping unit at Philadelphia.”

The message continued, “We extend our deepest condolences to his fiancée, his family and friends, his teammates and the entire Philadelphia Union community. MLS is coordinating with the club to provide players and family members with the resources and support they need during this tragic time.”
