Puerto Varas, Chile to Host new Ironman 70.3 Starting in 2026
Ironman has announced that Puerto Varas, Chile, will become the newest destination to host an Ironman 70.3 triathlon. The inaugural IM 70.3 Puerto Varas race is set to take place on Sunday, April 12, 2026.
“We’re thrilled to continue growing the IM brand in Chile,” said Catalina Escudero, Communications Director at World Centric Group, the event owner and organizer. “Our aim is to set new trends with this event, providing athletes with a world-class experience while also creating a sustainable race that reflects the spirit and values of Puerto Varas.”
Set in the heart of southern Chile, the 2026 Ironman 70.3 Puerto Varas triathlon promises participants an unforgettable race through one of the most scenic regions in South America. The race kicks off with a 1.9 km swim in the pristine waters of Lake Llanquihue, offering panoramic views of the iconic Osorno Volcano. Athletes will then transition to a 90 km bike course along an out-and-back route that winds through the picturesque roads surrounding the lake. This mostly flat course, with a few gentle hills, allows for both high-speed racing and spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and forests.
The event concludes with a 21 km run along a three-lap course that weaves through the city center and along Puerto Varas’ Costanera waterfront. Lined with local spectators, the flat and fast run route offers a dynamic atmosphere as athletes pass through lush greenery and vibrant public spaces on their way to the finish line.
Puerto Varas, located in Chile’s Lake District, offers a unique combination of natural beauty and cultural charm. Known for its clear lakes, snow-capped volcanoes, and deep-rooted German heritage, the city provides the ideal setting for an international endurance event.
A Symbol of Recovery and Resilience
This new event carries added significance as Puerto Varas continues to recover from a severe weather incident earlier this year. In May, a powerful tornado caused extensive damage to local infrastructure and affected more than 250 homes. The introduction of the IM 70.3 Puerto Varas triathlon is seen as a critical step in supporting the city’s recovery, both economically and emotionally. By drawing athletes and visitors from around the world, the event is expected to boost tourism, increase hotel occupancy, and revitalize local businesses.
