Queen Camilla Calls In a Royal Reinforcement for Palace Ceremony

With multiple senior royals currently unable to represent Britain’s royal family at public events, Queen Camilla called up a reinforcement who isn’t seen so often: Birgitte, the Duchess of Gloucester.

On Thursday, Camilla and Birgitte presented The Queen’s Anniversary Prizes for Higher and Further Education at Buckingham Palace, honoring 22 colleges and universities for excellence. Birgitte’s husband, Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester, was also present, according to the Court Circular, an official record of royal engagements released by the palace, and co-hosted the reception following the ceremony.

Richard, 79, is first cousin to the late Queen Elizabeth II, and the first cousin once removed of current monarch King Charles III. Both Richard and Birgitte, 77, are full-time working royals, and they live at Kensington Palace. They have three children: Alexander Windsor, the Earl of Ulster, Lady Davina Windsor, and Lady Rose Windsor. The Duke and Duchess make appearances on behalf of the palace in the U.K. and abroad, and are patrons of dozens of organizations. Birgitte, for example, works with the Lawn Tennis Association and Parkinson’s U.K., among others, while Richard is patron to many as well, with a special focus on organizations related to architecture, his profession before he inherited his royal title and position.

As for the rest of the royal family, King Charles officially returned to work this week and had his first official appearance since he was recently diagnosed with cancer, and his schedule moving forward while receiving treatment is somewhat up in the air. Kate Middleton is recovering from an abdominal surgery and will not make appearances until Easter. Her husband, Prince William, is back at work now after taking a break following Middleton’s surgery, but reportedly with a lighter-than-typical schedule. Meanwhile, Queen Camilla has been busy with engagements in their stead, as has Princess Anne.
