Shot by Cass Bird and styled by Julia Sarr Jamois, this campaign celebrates the confidence the pioneering rapper-actress has embodied for decades. “I’ve observed so many icons in my life,” said Latifah in the promotional video (below) before answering the question: “What makes an icon?”
The esteemed trailblazer replied, “[It’s] being so good at being who you are that people say, ‘Damn, who is that?’” She continued, “I stand for women. I stand for my beautiful Blackness. I stand for humanity. Do. yo’. thang.”
Latifah also exclusively spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about the campaign.
“Style is a never-ending story because I think style is a bit of a mindset. Style is everywhere. It’s everything. It’s emotion, it’s an attitude. But it is sort of timeless,” the New Jersey native explained to the outlet, adding that when it comes to style, she loves it all—from the “people who back it” to the “people who wear it.”
Notably, the acclaimed artist confessed that she’s been a fan of the Khlöe Kardashian-founded brand. “I’ve worn Good American for quite some time now in various projects. I’ve worn their jeans on The Equalizer. I’ve worn a suit of theirs at the Super Bowl, to an after party. I wore a denim outfit just the other day to my bodyguard’s 60th birthday. We partied all night,” Latifah detailed while praising the brand’s size inclusivity.
“This works for who I am and the women and people who I speak to,” she expressing while gushing over the return of ’90s fashion. “Get back in those baggy jeans, oversize this and that,” Latifah quipped. “Things go around and come back around. It’s fun to watch it happen.”
