Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson is a new “lead” owner for the Maryland Colts franchise in the National Thoroughbred League.

As part of the deal, the two-time MVP will help widen the access to horse racing for local children in the area as well.

“I am truly excited to be a part of this great opportunity,” Jackson said of the move. “The core values of excellence, teamwork, community, and leadership will help push the program beyond our expectations.

“I believe through our efforts and determination more opportunities will be opened for the youth of the state of Maryland. We look forward to seeing the success of such a great vision become the reality.”

NBA legend Julius Erving and New York Giants linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux are among the notable sports luminaries who have invested in the endeavor.

The NTL launched in 2023 with six teams and the Colts are one of four expansion franchises for 2024. The league is also increasing its prize pool from $1 million to $3 million.

The team-based format for NTL events is a big departure from what fans have grown accustomed to seeing at horse races. One horse from each of the 10 franchises competes in a given race, and the results accumulate over the course of the season. The opener gets underway Saturday in Nashville, Tennessee.
