Real Madrid without four players for La Liga battle with Real Oviedo
Real Madrid will be missing four players through injury for Sunday’s La Liga game against Real Oviedo.
Real Madrid will be missing four players for Sunday’s La Liga game against Real Oviedo, with Ferland Mendy, Eduardo Camavinga, Jude Bellingham and Endrick unavailable for selection.
Mendy, Camavinga, Bellingham and Endrick remain on the treatment table, but there is a boost for the capital giants, as Antonio Rudiger returns to the squad after serving a suspension against Osasuna.
Thiago Pitarch has made an excellent impression on head coach Xabi Alonso in the early stages of his tenure, and the 18-year-old is an option in midfield, benefitting from the absences of Bellingham and Camavinga.
“I’m sure it’s a special match for Oviedo and its fans. Now we’re going to play, and it’s also very important for us to continue growing away from home, to be competitive, and no matter where we play, to continue performing at a high level. It’s the third week since we started, but we’re excited for tomorrow’s match,” said Alonso during his press conference.
Alonso faces a number of big calls when it comes to team selection, with Rudiger battling to return in the middle, but Eder Militao and Dean Huijsen were excellent as a centre-back two against Osasuna.
Mendy, Camavinga, Bellingham, Endrick missing for Real Madrid against Real OviedoAlonso must also decide whether to keep Brahim Diaz alongside Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe in the final third or recall Rodrygo, who is being heavily linked with a move away from Bernabeu.
When quizzed on Rodrygo, Alonso said: “For me, the season has begun, and my time has almost come. We’re only one game in. All the decisions about playing and making the starting eleven are mine, solely and exclusively. I speak with many players, and I’ve spoken with Rodrygo too, of course.”
Rodrygo is being linked with a switch to Manchester City, and a big-money move to the Etihad Stadium is believed to be a serious possibility before the end of the transfer window.
Alonso addresses Rodrygo future amid exit speculationArsenal have also been linked with Rodrygo, who has scored 68 goals and registered 51 assists in 270 appearances for Real Madrid since making the move from Santos in the summer of 2019.
Franco Mastantuono made his debut off the bench against Osasuna, and the teenager is another option in the final third of the field.
“I saw him in good shape the other day. He had a good impact, good energy. Since he’s in the squad, he has a chance to play like everyone else,” said Alonso.
Real Madrid are again expected to start with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Alvaro Carreras in the full-back positions, while Arda Guler is likely to feature in the middle of midfield.
