Earlier reports circulating in Nigerian media outlets linked the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) with Hervé Renard, the former head coach of the Zambian national team.
The Super Eagles coaching role has been vacant since former Ajax star, Finidi George, resigned from his role after less than two months in charge of the team.
Despite previous denials, recent reports indicate that the NFF is now actively pursuing Hervé Renard, who previously managed Saudi Arabia, in their bid to secure a 2026 World Cup ticket. These new developments come amid financial concerns voiced by Nigerian football fans regarding the potential hire.
BBS Sports journalist Oluwashina Okeleji had earlier debunked the reports, citing a top NFF official who confirmed that there had been no discussions with Renard to replace George.
“Nigeria FA (NFF) denies Hervé Renard link. This report is inaccurate. We’ve not contacted Renard or his reps,” the official told BBCAfrica, as reported by Okeleji on his X account.
However, the latest information suggests that the NFF has now made contact with Renard, signaling a potential shift from home-based coach to employing a foreign based coach despite budgetary concerns.
