Ridge Racer Is Coming To PS5
Weâd gotten a little excited at the news that arcade classic Ridge Racer would be making a launch day appearance on the Nintendo Switch 2. A little sad, however, that weâd need to buy new hardware to give it another go.
Well, we have some good news if you were feeling in the same boat â the re-release will be coming to PlayStation 5.
Ported to modern hardware by Hamster Corporation as part of its new Arcade Archives 2 series, the 1993 classic will be coming to both platforms on 5 June. Itâll mark the first time the game, as originally playable in arcade cabinets, will be released on consoles.
Though Ridge Racer would receive a port to the PlayStation in 1994, that version was a technically downgraded adaptation of the game, making the Switch 2 release the first time the original cabinet version has found its way to a home console.
The game will have wheel support, as well as compatibility with H-shifters and clutches. That had us a bit confused with its Switch 2 release initially, but it makes sense now that itâs been confirmed for PS5.
As with other re-releases in the Arcade Archives series, Ridge Racer will include a few bonus features. Multiple save states can be recorded, and thereâs a rewind feature, handy when you inevitably run into the back of a sluggish AI and lose several seconds, plus âTime Attackâ mode. How that will work, given the whole game is effectively a time attack anyway, remains to be seen, but weâre curious.
Sadly, with Ridge Racer being a single-player title, thereâll be no online play as with other re-releases in Arcade Archives.
Any other arcade titles youâd like to see follow Ridge Racer in Hamster Corporationâs series? Weâre thinking Sega Touring Car Championship or Le Mans 24 would be some pretty tantalising candidates.
