Rob McElhenney left with head in hands as Wrexham score goal of season contender on opening day

Rob McElhenney was left stunned after seeing Wrexham score an early goal of the season contender in a 3-2 win at the Racecourse Ground.

The Wrexham co-owner was in Wales alongside Hollywood legend Ryan Reynolds as the Dragons played their first match in League One in 20 years.

But it was after 29 minutes when the noise in north Wales really hit fever pitch.

That’s because Jack Marriott netted a surefire goal of the season contender to send the fans into raptures.

Chesting the ball down on the edge of the box, Marriott then let rip with a vicious volley with the outside of his boot that flew past Nathan Bishop and into the top corner of the net.

The fans couldn’t believe what they were seeing and neither could Wrexham’s Hollywood owners as McElhenney turned around with his hands on his head to face Deadpool superstar Reynolds.

Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria was also in attendance and shared a video of the scenes on social media.

While Richard Kone clawed one back for Wycombe, it was a day that belonged to Wrexham as Steven Fletcher wrapped up the win with a late strike to make it 3-1, before Sam Vokes grabbed a late consolation.

Fletcher revealed McElhenney and Reynolds gave the squad a boost by visiting the home dressing room before the match.

“It’s always a lift, you can’t say it’s not,” said the 37-year-old forward.

“They were in before the game and there’s no pressure with it, no one’s taken aback, they’re just one of the lads with the way they come in which is good.”

Having won back-to-back promotions to reach League One, Wrexham know that this season could be more about consolidating their spot in the third-tier.

Wrexham will face no less than eight former Premier League sides this term, a clear sign that the club are now mixing it with the big boys.

But sitting fourth in the table after their opening match, fans will be dreaming of another Hollywood campaign as they target a stunning three promotions in as many years.

Next up for Wrexham is a clash with Sheffield United in the Carabao Cup.
