Rosalie James Unveils Wonderful New Single/Music Video “Girl I Was”
Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Rosalie James releases her new single/music video, “Girl I Was,” a track lifted from her upcoming album, Full of Chemicals. Slated for release in June, the album explores James’ struggles with neurodiversity, addiction, and mental health.
James shares, “There is so much I want to say, and the depths of terminal sadness and fleeting joy can only be properly expressed through music – any other form of communication is corrupted by confusion and doubt. Maybe feeling too much is actually feeling exactly the right amount when you’re trying to make something meaningful. Anyway, I can’t stop now.”
Produced by Daniel Knowles, “Girl I Was” narrates the artist’s experience in a toxic, abusive relationship. Full of Chemicals features contributions from Jorge Balbi (Sharon Van Etten), Lukas Frank (Storefront Church), Steve Jackson (Leo Sayer, Elkie Brooks), Garett Lang (Henry Wolfe, Lisa Loeb) and Jason Abraham Roberts (Norah Jones, Ben Kweller).
James grew up playing guitar and piano, listening to The Beatles and The Bangles on her Sony Walkman, along with ‘80s synth-pop, new wave, and dream-pop.
Since the age of nine, she has experienced sensory sensitivities, difficulty managing emotions and social interaction. After being treated for depression, anxiety, PDD, and substance issues, in 2023 she was diagnosed with autistic spectrum disorder.
After two degrees and ten years as a Social Worker in social care and mental health, last summer Rosalie decided to return to her creative roots.
“Girl I Was” begins with James’ rich, evocative voice atop shimmering, flowing surfaces riding a delicious, mid-tempo rhythm. On the chorus, the harmonics take on misty, sparkling energy as James’ vocals elevate to lush, dreamy timbres. The lyrics evoke a mood of introspection and hints of melancholy, all conveyed by James’ beautifully expressive voice.
There’s something about James’ voice – an elusive, beguiling quality – that captures the ears of listeners. It’s a voice at once vulnerable and full of emotional authenticity.
Endlessly captivating, “Girl I Was” sculpts a cathartic balm, highlighting the eloquent songwriting and marvelous voice of Rosalie James.
