QotW: My favorite PS2 RPG is Dragon Quest VIII. (I would say Persona 4 or FFX, but I prefer their later re-releases.)
Also, the correct Xenoblade series rankings is X, 3, 1, Torna, getting hit by a truck, and then 2.
Ha, I was also going to say Dragon Quest VIII! It showed it was possible to transfer the open-world of a typical Squenix 2D RPG into a 3D format, in a way that they completely failed to do with Final Fantasy X, which was a series of pretty corridors.
Similarly, I’d make a case for Persona 3 or 4, but again I like P3P and Golden more. I’d guess Nocturne and .Hack are in the mix too. But DQVIII for me. Lovely art style, which still looks great, huge and interesting campaign, memorable characters, fun skill system. Winner.
Far be it for me to disagree: DQVIII was tops. But if we want another A+ tier game, for me it was Rogue Galaxy. Coming hot off Dark Cloud 2, I really enjoyed that!
Speaking of Dragon Quest… Kelley was SUPER CLOSE on her “Shirin the Wanderer started the Mystery Dungeon series” comment, but Torneko of Dragon Quest IV glory actually did, with his SNES title beating Shirin by a couple of years.
Also, Chris might’ve just had a slip of the tongue, but 3DS & Wii-U eshops died this year. And to answer the question of why SMT: Strange Journey wasn’t SMTIV, it’s because the setting wasn’t in Tokyo or Japan. That’s basically the numbered SMT throughline.
In early April 2024, online play and other functionality that uses online communication will end for Nintendo 3DS* and Wii U software. This also includes online co-operative play, internet rankings, and data distribution.
