Rumour: Ubisoft Is Still Gunning for Live Service Success with New Multiplayer Shooter

Project Scout returns

Ubisoft just can’t help but chase that pot of gold at the end of the live service rainbow.

According to a series of fresh leaks, the publisher is still working on a new multiplayer shooter with sci-fi leanings — a project that was originally outed earlier in the year.

Its in-development title is Project Scout, and it’s being described as “large scale” and “competitive”. It’s also running on Unreal Engine 5.

Previous reports had it pegged as a battle royale in the mold of Apex Legends, but that genre isn’t specifically mentioned in these latest murmurings.

Of course, it’s hard not to be cynical right off the bat, considering Ubisoft’s recent dealings in the live service space.

Its previous attempt at creating a live service juggernaut was the woefully named XDefiant, which was completely shut down in the summer, just over a year after its initial launch. Rumours of that game’s death had started circling mere months after its full release.

And before that, there was the ill-fated Hyper Scape — but most of you probably can’t even remember that one at this point, and we certainly can’t blame you.

As we all know, the live service market is brutal — but Ubisoft’s had obvious hits in the past, and so it’ll believe that new properties like Project Scout are worth further investment.

It’s just difficult to see the company replicate the likes of Rainbow Six: Siege or For Honor based on its current form.

Still, Project Scout has reportedly been in the works for at least a couple of years at this point. We’re probably not far away from a full reveal.

What are your thoughts on Ubisoft’s trajectory right now? Does Project Scout stand a chance, based on what we know so far? Feel free to sigh in the comments section below.

He still takes his fighting games seriously, but RPGs are his true passion. The Witcher, Persona, Dragon Quest, Mass Effect, Final Fantasy, Trails, Tales — he’s played ’em all. A little too much, some might say.
