‘Rust’ Trailer Reveals First Footage From Alec Baldwin Film Ahead of May Release
The trailer for Alec Baldwin’s “Rust” dropped on Wednesday, three and a half years after the on-set shooting incident that left cinematographer Halyna Hutchins dead and director Joel Souza injured.
Since this is a Western, the clip features multiple shooting scenes despite the real-life tragedy. People was first to premiere the trailer.
As seen at the end of the video, Hutchins’ widower Matthew Hutchins gets an executive producer credit, which was a stipulation in her family dropping their initial wrongful death lawsuit. Baldwin is also a producer on the movie and gets a story by credit alongside writer/director Souza.
According to the logline, “In 1880s Kansas, recently orphaned Lucas McCalister accidentally kills a rancher and is sentenced to hang. In a twist of fate, his estranged grandfather, the notorious outlaw Harland Rust (Baldwin), breaks him out of jail and takes him on the run toward Mexico. As they flee across the unforgiving wilderness, the fugitive pair must outrun the determined U.S. Marshal Wood Helm and a ruthless bounty hunter named ‘Preacher.’”
The film also stars Patrick Scott McDermott, Josh Hopkins, Travis Fimmel, Frances Fisher and Jake Busey.
Hutchins died on Oct. 21, 2021, when a prop gun Baldwin was holding went off during rehearsal. The actor was ultimately found not responsible for manslaughter when his trial was dismissed in July 2024 once the court determined that New Mexico police and prosecutors deliberately withheld evidence — live bullets relevant to the case — from the defense team.
Meanwhile, armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed is currently serving 18 months in prison for her role in Hutchins’ death.
“Rust” had its world premiere at Poland’s Camerimage in November. It will premiere on digital and in select theaters on May 2.
