If Sabrina Carpenter, who is five feet tall, and Kendall Jenner, who is five feet eleven inches tall, both look good in pretty much the exact same winter coat, then chances are this is a staple that should be hanging in your closet. Much like the plain white tee, the basic blue jean, and the classic red lip, the long black coat never goes out of style and works on pretty much everyone. If you’re still looking for a warm fall layer other than that insulated denim jacket you’ve been wearing since mid-September, look no further.

Kenny styled her coat in a timeless model-off-duty fashion: T-shirt and jeans, scarf, black bag, shades, and a hat as if she’s hiding from photographers even though she’s clearly not. It’s okay! Make the sidewalk your catwalk, KenJen!

Kendall Jenner is seen in New York City on October 27, 2025.

Out in Brooklyn, Sabrina Carpenter took a cozier tack, bundling up with a bigger scarf (in plaid, made by Gigi Hadid’s Guest in Residence), looser jeans, and a roomier black coat (from Babaton by Aritzia), and accessorized with a burgundy Celine 16 bag.

The thing about black is that it goes with anything and everything. Take whatever outfit you want to wear, throw a black wool winter coat over it, and head out. Boom, you’ve winterized yourself.

Wondering who is not styling her black coat with jeans? Jennifer Lawrence—she took a similar item (the duster-length jacket), and threw it over a dress for a business-y ensemble we loved. Sometimes less is more, and simpler is better. Don’t overthink it. Buy it in black.

These are the coats we’ve had our eyes on all season—just remember to always check if it comes in black so you don’t play the “Does this go?” game every morning. Or opt for a trench if you live in a warmer clime. But for the above NYC girlies, it’s black all the way.
