Saints center Erik McCoy could return sooner rather than later
Erik McCoy, the New Orleans Saints’ center, could return to the field soon after being on injured reserve for the past few weeks.
McCoy, who was selected to his first Pro Bowl last season, would be a huge return for the Saints. On Wednesday, head coach Darren Rizzi said that McCoy is one of the more underrated offensive linemen in the NFL. He also said that his loss was a blow to the offense.
āYou look at his consistency and the high level that heās played at; it’s a big deal,ā Rizzi said. āNumber two is his leadership. Heās kind of a leader by example, not a real vocal guy, but I got a lot of respect for Erik.ā
āMost people may not realize your center is making a lot of calls, setting protections, and all those kinds of things with the quarterback. His experience, leadership, playāyou take all of those things and take them away… so did it affect us as a team? Yes.ā
On Wednesday, quarterback Derek Carr, who is also eager for McCoy’s return, also mentioned his leadership abilities.
“His ability to communicate when things are not as scouted, his recall from personal experienceāthings no one will ever see or know.” Carr said when asked about what McCoy brings to the offense.
McCoy was listed as limited during practice on Wednesday. With the Saints also releasing center Connor McGovern earlier this week, all signs point to him returning this Sunday at home against the Browns.
