Scare for Pep: Man City boss may need another midfield reshuffle
Despite a strong performance to beat Villarreal, Manchester City grapple with injury concerns as Nico Gonzalez may have joined Rodri on the sidelines ahead of a crucial stretch.
Pep Guardiola is sweating over the health of another player after Manchester City’s 2-0 success over Villarreal in the Champions League on Tuesday.Â
Goals from Erling Haaland and Bernardo Silva in the opening half were enough to seal City’s second win in this year’s league phase, though they sit behind perfect Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Milan and Arsenal.Â
While the result was what Guardiola wanted, the Spaniard was possibly left disappointed by an injury to one of his backup options to Rodri.Â
The Spanish midfielder has had injury issues following his return from a serious knee injury, with his latest issue a hamstring issue suffered against Brentford.
Manchester City: Rodri’s replacement possibly injured with groin issue
“It’s not long, but it’s muscular and you have to be careful,â said Guardiola recently about Rodri.Â
“We’ve tried so many times, we’ve tried to not take a risk, but we have not been able to do that. So we will see.â
On Tuesday, Nico Gonzalez appeared to sustain a groin injury early in the second half and was substituted by Mateo Kovacic in the 57th minute.
According to The Manchester Evening News, Gonzalez may have also suffered an impact injury, so his exact condition remains uncertain.
Gonzalez has made 27 appearances for Man City since joining from Porto for ÂŁ50m at the start of 2025, scoring one goal during that period.
What is Manchester Cityâs injury situation?
While Gonzalez’s potential injury could rule out the ex-Porto midfielder for a few weeks in the worst-case scenario, Abdukodir Khusanov and Rodri are currently the Cityzens’ sidelined players.Â
Rayan Cherki has returned after sustaining an injury against Tottenham Hotspur in August; the former Lyon player has since played against Everton last weekend and on Tuesday.Â
Omar Marmoush’s situation is similar, as he returned against Villarreal after sitting out the 2-0 win over Everton due to an injury sustained on international duty with Egypt in September.
Cityâs relatively healthy squad thus puts them in a good position ahead of fixtures against Aston Villa, Swansea City, Bournemouth, Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool.
