To quote a Drake line from his Certified Lover Boy opener “Champagne Poetry,” albeit edited to fit the current circumstances, “The city’s underwater and people may be in denial.” ScHoolboy Q announced that his Toronto stop for The Blue Lips Tour was canceled and seemingly suggested that the 6 God may have been behind it.
Q’s frustration was understandable as the Thursday (July 18) show was his tour opener. “THey just cancelled my sHow in TORONTO,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter) with a laughing emoji. “CANADIAN POLICE DONT WANT NOBODY FROM TDE PERFORMING.” Why wouldn’t they want anyone from TDE gracing their stages? The immediate conclusion fans reached was that the fact that Drizzy went head-to-head with former TDE signee Kendrick Lamar two months ago, and he may be exercising his power in the city to stop anyone affiliated with K. Dot from getting some shine on his home turf.
The 37-year-old rapper went deeper into the situation, drawing a parallel to some recent happenings in California. “TOP was just wit Wayne & Baby smH partynextdoor just Had a sHow @ tHe palladium,” he wrote. “If we wanted to get yall we would’ve just did it.. now wHen sumbody get Hurt don’t cry…” The intimation of violence perhaps has to do with the fact Rick Ross was jumped in Vancouver a few weeks ago after he decided to play “Not Like Us” at one of his shows.

If it wasn’t clear already that ScHoolboy Q was alluding to Drake, he made it crystal clear with his next tweet. “Actually I get it,” he wrote. “Nvm tHis sH*t [lowkey] hilarious *laughing emoji*… Iono wHy dot put me in tHat f**king video.” The referenced video is the “Not Like Us” video which came out earlier this month and featured a cameo appearance by the Los Angeles rapper, among several other hometown acts and easter eggs.
While this was the narrative that Q was seemingly running with, several fans reminded him that Toronto underwent some harsh storms this week that caused flooding and power outages, particularly in the For All The Dogs artist’s home. “Crashing out like this not knowing there was a flood is hilarious lol,” one user wrote in a quote tweet of the Blue Lips rapper’s post about Top, Lil Wayne, and Birdman.
DJ Akademiks also quoted the same tweet and wrote, “Sending Prayers for Peace and healing. Battle was good. Time to move on.” While the effects of Drizzy and Kendrick Lamar’s battle continue to have an impact on the music landscape, Ak seemingly did not believe it needed to get to a place where threats of violence were being made.

ScHoolboy Q clarified his statement, writing, “I neva said ‘ima kill sumbody’ im saying if we wanted to crack it off we could’ve smH. Rap and move on playin tuff gon get sumbody Hurt it’s all good.” He separated himself from the violence, closing his tweet with “Ima soccer dad.”
DJ Hed, an admitted close friend of Kendrick Lamar and his affiliates, plus a go-to source during their battle, quoted Q’s tweet about the show cancellations and dropped a laughing emoji. Minutes later, he shared the poster for Morris Chestnut and Vivica A. Fox’s 2001 film Two Can Play That Game; this was seemingly him hinting at the possibility that they will work behind the scenes in Los Angeles to keep Drake and his affiliates from performing in the city as retaliation.
Given Drake’s wide-spanning popularity, it is difficult to imagine him and his people being kept out of Los Angeles but the threat of violence could affect that. Time will tell what other ways this battle will impact other people’s moves.
