If there’s an athlete that can relate to Caitlin Clark, it’s Serena Williams, and the tennis star offered advice to Clark as she navigates her first season in the WNBA.
“I just love that she tries to stay grounded,” Williams said. “She said she doesn’t look at her social [media], I get it, I don’t either. I think it’s so important to just continue doing what she’s doing, no matter what other people do. If people are negative, it’s because they can’t do what you do, basically. And hopefully she’ll continue to do what she’s doing.”
Much like Clark, Williams experienced success at a young age and was the center of attention in the sports world. Williams persevered through having the spotlight on her to become one of the greatest athletes of all time, and now Clark finds herself looking to do the same.
As Clark made the transition from the collegiate ranks to the WNBA, her arrival brought plenty of attention—likely some of it unwanted. As Williams said, Clark has stayed grounded through all the outside noise to stay focused on improving as a player.
Through 14 games, Clark is averaging 15.6 points, six assists and 4.9 rebounds per game. The Indiana Fever have struggled in the early part of the season, sitting at 4-10 and in 10th place in the Eastern Conference, but with a young roster that includes Clark and former Rookie of the Year Aliyah Boston, things could be looking up for the team soon.
For now, Clark will look to follow Williams’ advice and “continue doing what she’s doing.”
