Tech Tycoon Mike Lynch Dead After Body Is Recovered From Sunken Yacht

The search for missing passengers from the yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily has reached a harrowing end.

Four days after a luxury boat sank during a violent storm, the Italian Coast Guard confirmed the body of the final passenger—who was among the six that went missing shortly after the incident—has been found in the wreckage, according to the Associated Press.

The woman—whose body was recovered just one day after the body of British tech magnate Mike Lynch was also found—has not yet been identified, per the outlet.

However, sources familiar with the matter previously confirmed to NBC News that as of Aug. 22, rescuers were still searching for Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, who was the last person missing from the boat.

Prior to the two latest discoveries, divers recovered four bodies among the ship’s wreckage, a source familiar with the rescue operations told NBC News earlier this week.

On Aug. 19, the yacht’s voyage faced an unexpected turn when a violent storm struck off the coast of Sicily. Director of Sicily’s Civil Protection Agency Salvatore Cocina previously shared that it was likely a waterborne tornado, known as a waterspout, noting that the boat was “in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

At the time—Lynch, who was known in the U.K. as “Britain’s Bill Gates”—embarked on the sailing vacation with his family and fellow associates as a celebratory trip after he was acquitted by a jury of fraud charges stemming from the 2011 sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion, according to NBC News.

The other passengers recovered from the wreckage were Lynch’s associates, many of whom were part of his defense during his fraud case, including Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy Bloomer and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo, Cocina previously confirmed to the outlet.

The body of the ship’s cook Recaldo Thomas was found shortly after the incident.

Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares was rescued shortly after the accident, along with nine other crew members and two other passengers. Eight of them were brought to a hospital and the rest were sent to a hotel nearby.

Altogether, 15 out of the 22 people who were on board survived.

Charlotte Golunski, a passenger who survived along with her 12-month-old daughter Sophie and partner James Emsley, reflected on the devastating turn their trip took.

“For two seconds, I lost my daughter in the sea, then quickly hugged her amid the fury of the waves,” she told Italian newspaper La Repubblica Aug. 20, per the BBC. “It was all dark. In the water I couldn’t keep my eyes open. I screamed for help but all I could hear around me was the screams of others.”
