Simone Biles Has a Message For ‘Miserable’ Fans After Jonathan Owens’ Gold Medal Controversy at the Olympics

Simone Biles had some time between gold medal victories at the 2024 Summer Olympics to shut down relationship critics.

On August 1, Biles defended husband Jonathan Owens, who has been catching flack from her fans since describing himself as the “catch” in their relationship during a joint podcast appearance in December 2023. At the time, the NFL player also claimed he “didn’t know” who Biles was when they matched on Raya in 2020, even though she’d already won four gold medals during the 2016 Olympics in Brazil. You can read more about the drama here.

Owens’ latest controversy? Wearing his wife’s history-making gold medal in Paris. On July 30, Biles earned her 8th Olympic medal when she led Team USA to victory in the women’s gymnastics team finals. “Witnessing history every time you step on the mat 😍🔥 Congrats baby on becoming the most decorated American gymnast in Olympic history,” he captioned an Instagram post with his wife. Just wow!!!! 8 of them!!!!! So thankful i was there to see it ❤️🤍💙”

Although Biles responded positively to the post, many fans didn’t find the gesture romantic considering his past statements. “Why he holding it like he won it,” one user commented, receiving over 15,000 likes. Another wrote, “Mr. I’m the prize wants to wear her prize…… I’m not surprised 😒.”

While Biles is busy adding even more medals to her collection—she secured gold in both the individual all-around final and the individual vault final—she took a moment between victories to correct one of her husband’s critics directly.

“Crazy thing is, I put my medal on every single one of my family members and took pictures. So don’t ever make assumptions,” she commented on TikTok creator Kiera Breaugh’s video on August 2. “Like y’all are so fucking miserable. Leave us alone.”

For her part, Breaugh doesn’t mind being called “miserable” by Biles. “I’m honored to be told to fuck off by such a such a talented woman,” Breaugh said in a TikTok video response to the GOAT’s comment. “Yeah, she told us to shut the fuck up, and she put the medal on him….I can’t really be mad if she told him to, you know what I mean?”

Breaugh continued, “And maybe he is really taking notes and keeping score, which is, that’s cute, that’s more than anyone’s ever done for me. And you know what? Maybe I am miserable. I’ll be called miserable by the most decorated gymnast of all time.”

For those keeping score, Biles now has 10 Olympic medals, seven of which are gold—and she could still add to those numbers in Paris. On August 4, Biles will compete in the women’s gymnastics finals for the uneven bars before suiting up for the balance beam and floor finals on August 5. And while Owens is currently on a flight back from Paris after missing part of the Chicago Bears’ training camp to watch Biles compete, he’ll surely keep cheering her on from home.
