Sir Jim Ratcliffe ‘approves record-breaking Manchester United bid for Joao Neves’

Manchester United prepare to pursue a record-breaking move for Benfica midfielder Joao Neves during the summer market, according to a report.

Manchester United’s new minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe has reportedly given the green light for the club to make a record-breaking move for Benfica midfielder Joao Neves during the summer market.
The Red Devils are expected to be busy during the upcoming transfer window even if they are unsuccessful in their attempts to qualify for the 2024-25 Champions League.

A number of areas of the squad are in need of strengthening, with the club expected to move for at least two defenders, while two attackers could also arrive.

The midfield is also expected to be revamped this summer, with Christian Eriksen and Casemiro potentially both moving on, while Sofyan Amrabat is unlikely to be signed on a permanent basis from Fiorentina.

Man United have been heavily linked with Neves this season, with the 19-year-old regarded as one of the best young talents in European football.

The three-time Portugal international has featured on 42 occasions for Benfica this season, scoring twice and registering two assists, including six appearances in the Champions League.

According to The Mirror, Man United are planning to move for Neves this summer, and Ratcliffe has given the green light for the club to make a record-breaking offer for his services.

Neves has a release clause of €120m (£102m) in his current deal, and Benfica could demand that it is paid in full, which would represent Man United’s biggest transfer of all time.

Last month, the midfielder, who has four years left to run on his current deal, refused to commit his long-term future to his Portuguese club when questioned on his plans for the future.

“I promise to do my best in every training session, in every game, and I think that is one of my greatest qualities,” Neves told reporters when asked whether he would be staying at Benfica.

“I’m focused on Benfica and even more so on [Thursday’s] game, which is the next one. I think I will do my best in every game and in every training session.”

In total, Neves has made 62 appearances for Benfica, scoring three goals and registering three assists in the process.

Man United are also said to be keen on Neves’s teammate Antonio Silva, who is regarded as one of the best young centre-backs in European football.

The 20-year-old has made 38 appearances for his Portuguese club this season, and he has another three years left to run on his contract at Estadio da Luz.
