Kaizer Chiefs haven’t enjoyed the strongest start to the DStv Premiership season, leading to the departure of coach Molefi Ntseki and the arrival of interim boss Cavin Johnson. However, for former Amakhosi winger Robson Muchichwa, the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations break couldn’t have come at a better time.
Talking to Soccer Laduma in an exclusive interview the Zimbabwean born Muchichwa stated that he doesn’t see any reason why Chiefs should sign any new players at this point of the season.

“(Cavin Johnson) has all the players in camp with him right now. Maybe only except for one who was with the Mozambique national team (Edmilson Dove). But he has about six weeks to work with these players and figure out the way forward. Six weeks is enough for a preseason and this is his preseason.”
Muchichwa further discusses how signing new players at this stage of the campaign is unnecessary.Â
“He can do a lot of things like looking at the combinations he would want to work with and make sure that he challenges for something in the second round. Not all is lost yet. They can come back as a much improved Kaizer Chiefs in the second round and this break should have helped them achieve that,” Muchichwa said.

The Zimbabwean legend emphasizes the importance of internal improvement rather than external recruitment.Â
“I don’t think they should add players at this stage. They should work with what they have. They just have to create combinations and other things like improving their state of mind. It’s too late to look at new players now because if the current players are struggling with the state of mind even the new players who might come in would also struggle with the same state of mind. So it’s better to work with what they have. Improve their state of mind. Create great combinations and win games to challenge for something at the end of the day. That’s what is important for now,” Muchichwa told Soccer Laduma.Â
Muchichwa’s message echoes the hopes of Amakhosi fans eager to see their team rise from the ashes and reclaim their place among the league’s elite. Whether coach Johnson utilizes the Afcon break to its full potential and unlocks the squad’s true potential remains to be seen. But one thing is certain, Chiefs return to action on February 13 against TS Galaxy and this game will be a test of the progress made during this valuable hiatus.
