LOVERS were seated in their VW Polo when occupants of a silver-grey VW Jetta ambushed and shot them to death.
The gunmen opened fire on the couple on Friday morning, 26 July on Clayfield Drive, Phoenix, north of Durban.
The woman (26) died inside the car, and the man (27) succumbed to his injuries a few metres away from where the shooting occurred.
It’s unclear why the couple was targeted. Residents are still in shock following the tragic incident.
A resident expressed her fear: “At the moment, I don’t know who these people were. But I heard they were in the parking lot when the shooting occurred. I heard gunshots and was terrified because we’ve never had such an incident in our area.”

Spokesman for the Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), Prem Balram said after the couple was gunned down in the parking lot of a housing complex on Clayfield Drive in Phoenix, residents contacted their Phoenix Operations Centre for help.
“On arrival, reaction officers found Phoenix SAPS in attendance. The body of a woman was found in the passenger seat of a white VW Polo, and a man believed to be her husband was located on the pathway approximately 20m away,” Balram stated.
He added that the couple was shot multiple times and were pronounced dead at the scene.
“Witnesses reported seeing a silver VW Jetta, registration unknown, fleeing the scene of the murders. Motive for the shooting has not been established,” he said.
KZN police spokeswoman Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo confirmed the incident, stating that police in Phoenix are investigating two counts of murder following the incident in which a 26-year-old woman and a 27-year-old man were found with multiple gunshot wounds.
“The incident happened on Clayfield Drive on 26 July,” Constable Ngcobo said.
