LEBOGANG Amanda Malete alleges that she’s been declared dead by Home Affairs while she’s very much alive.

The 29-year-old woman from Protea Glen, Soweto, was stunned when she received a call from an insurance company in 2021 regarding a claim made in her name.

Upon discovering that Home Affairs had her listed as dead since 2021 due to natural causes, Amanda shared her disbelief with Daily Sun.

“Back in 2021, I lost my ID in Thembisa. I suspect someone found it, used it to add me on their insurance policy, and later attempted to claim in my name. My mother was the one who received a call inquiring about my existence, to which she confirmed that I was still alive. That’s how we learned about the fraudulent insurance claim,” Amanda said.

She has made numerous attempts to rectify her status at Home Affairs, all to no avail.

“I was even asked to present my baptism certificate as proof of my identity and that I’m alive. Unfortunately, that led nowhere,” she recounted.

This has severely impacted Amanda’s life. She couldn’t vote, pursue further studies, seek employment, and essentially move forward with her life.

“I’m in a state of limbo, feeling as though my life is stagnant,” she added.

Amanda is also a mother to two children, for whom she is unable to provide adequately due to her ‘deceased’ status.

“My son is starting grade R next year, and I can’t even secure a birth certificate for him because I’m officially dead. I desperately need assistance. I’ve suffered enough.”

Amanda’s mum Betty Malete told Daily Sun about their fruitless efforts to seek help from Home Affairs.

“We’ve even visited her birthplace but found no assistance. Home Affairs suggested we obtain a letter from a pastor, which also proved futile. It’s stressful, especially since Amanda has children to care for, and I won’t always be here to support them,” Betty said.

Home Affairs spokesman Siyabulela Qoza said the department is still investigating the matter.
