MZANSI’S beloved ex-Bafana Bafana coach is now a doctor.
Former footballer and Sundowns coach, Pitso Mosimane, has received an honorary doctorate from the University of Johannesburg (UJ). The 59-year-old football star from Kagiso in Gauteng was honoured at the winter graduation ceremony in Joburg on Wednesday, 24 July.
In the auditorium, there were notable former football coaches who had previously embarked on this journey, including luminary coaches Florent Ibenge, Aliou Cisse, and Jomo Sono.
The university announced on their X page (formerly Twitter) that they honoured him for his leadership and achievements, which have paved the way for other African coaches. They stated that he also elevated the status of African football on the global stage.Â
“Congratulations and thank you for exceptional contributions to the sport and commitment to excellence. Today, excitement is in the air as UJ confers an honorary doctoral degree on Pitso Mosimane, one of South Africa’s most celebrated football coaches,” read the post.

“Thank you to those that are here, and other graduates. I’m deeply honoured by this as a recipient of this doctorate under UJ,” he said.
He reflected on how this moment serves as a testament to his life and journey as a footballer.Â
“Growing up, I never thought football would change my life this way. Football has been my passport, and I have met and connected with very influential people,” he said.Â
Dr Mosimane noted that football changed not only his family background, but his life as well. He highlighted his achievements, including the skills he acquired in the field as a coach.
