With the increased interest from Europe for Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Teboho Mokoena, the club has taken a step to protect themselves, the Siya crew has been informed.

Siya sources have indicated that Sundowns’ intentions are either to do their best to keep Mokoena or to increase the asking price by offering him a new contract.

Sources then went on to discuss the potential new deal with the Bafana Bafana star who has been raising his profile with great performances at the current Africa Cup of Nations where his team will face Nigeria in the semi-finals on Wednesday.

“They don’t want to let him go. They have taken a step to keep him at the team or maybe make him one of the most expensive players in South Africa by offering him a new three and a half year deal. It’s not just a deal. It’s a very big deal and although he is at Afcon with Bafana Bafana the deal is as good as done,” said the Siya source.

“The new deal means he would be at Sundowns until January 2029 if no team can afford him. The club is happy to keep him and that’s why they have given him this big deal to sign,” the source told Soccer Laduma.

A second Siya source added that it’s not just Mokoena who would get such a long deal as Sundowns have been approaching their contracts like European clubs, in recent times.

“You know since the Sporting Director (Flemming Berg) took over that’s how they are working on contracts. Even a year or so before an expiry they already offer their players a new long term deal. They did the same with Peter Shalulile and also with Mothobi Mvala as they made sure they keep them for a long period.

“They are using the European model of doing contracts and that’s why they have also made sure they offer Teboho (Mokoena) a three and half year deal. It’s a way to fend away suitors as like this the player doesn’t come cheap,” the source observed.
